Polyethylene is a typical thermoplastic, odorless, odorless, non-toxic flammable white powder. The molded PE resins are all extruded and granulated waxy particles and have a milky white appearance. The higher the molecular weight, the better its physical and mechanical properties and the closer to the required level of engineering materials. However, the higher the molecular weight, the more difficult it is to process. Polyethylene has a melting point of 100-130C. Its low temperature resistance is excellent. Good mechanical properties can still be maintained at -60 °C, but the use temperature is 80 ~ 110 °C.
Polyethylene has good chemical stability and can withstand dilute nitric acid, dilute sulfuric acid and any concentration of hydrochloric acid, hydrofluoric acid, phosphoric acid, formic acid, acetic acid, ammonia, amines, hydrogen peroxide, sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide etc. at room temperature. Solution. However, it is not resistant to strong oxidative corrosion such as fuming sulfuric acid, concentrated nitric acid, and a mixture of chromic acid and sulfuric acid. At room temperature, the above solvents will slowly attack the polyethylene. At 90-100°C, concentrated sulfuric acid and concentrated nitric acid will rapidly attack the polyethylene, causing it to break or decompose.
Under the action of the atmosphere, sunlight, and oxygen, polyethylene undergoes aging, discoloration, cracking, brittleness, or powdering, and loses its mechanical properties. At the molding processing temperature, due to oxidation, it will also reduce its melt viscosity, resulting in discoloration and streaks. Therefore, attention should be paid to the molding process and the use process or material selection. Because polyethylene has the above properties and is easy to process and shape, the recycling of polyethylene is of far-reaching value.
